5 Tips for Managing a Successful Giveaway Campaign

Whether you’re looking to grow your following, create partnerships with like-minded businesses, or increase your interactions with your followers, running a giveaway campaign through social media is a fantastic way to build brand awareness for your business. This is a tried and true strategy that when run correctly, can make a huge difference for your online presence in social media. If you’re looking to run a successful giveaway campaign, here are five tips to help get you started.

  1. Make the entry instructions clear

When you encounter a giveaway on social media, the instructions for how to enter are clearly defined in the post. Most often, businesses will use some combination of following their account, following a partner account (if applicable), tagging friends in the comments, and/or sharing the post to their story. Whatever you decide to use as your entry criteria, make sure the instructions are easy to follow

  1. If possible, ask the winner to post about winning

One of the main problems to overcome in running a giveaway is the “too good to be true” mentality. When free stuff is on the line, many people believe that the giveaway itself is a ploy to grow their following. Many organizations that do these big giveaways for items like cars or vacations have done a poor job of verifying that a winner was actually selected. If possible, ask the person who wins to post on their account or tag them in a post announcing the giveaway winner.

  1. Make the prize worth it!

This should seem obvious, but if you’re asking people to like, share, and tag friends in the comments, the prize should be something unique and worth the time it takes to complete those tasks. Offering unique prizes that are not available for sale, or bundles that make sense as a package are great options for prizes.

  1. If you’re looking to partner with another business, it should make sense

Many businesses partner with other businesses for giveaways to ensure mutual benefit and growth. Here are some examples:

  • A famous chef partnering with a new grill company to giveaway a grill package
  • A celebrity partnering with a new alcohol brand to giveaway product
  • A musician partnering with a local music shop or boutique instrument company to giveaway an instrument package

These partnerships make sense because they are in the same or adjacent industries (using celebrities pretty much always works). Asking a business in a completely different industry reduces the benefit of cross-promotion and tapping into a new social media demographic. One of the main benefits of partnership is a mutual growth of followers, so you want to make sure that their followers would be interested in your page.

  1. If you have the time, reach out to the people who entered

This is optional, but this idea ties into the same thought process we discussed in point two. If you reach out to those who entered the giveaway, this helps to dispel that the whole campaign is a sham without any chance of actually winning.
